This was with a view to creating an understanding of their significance to Yorbá culture. Yoruba oral literature such as stories, myths, folktales, proverbs, and orík, provided useful means for the interpretation of the icons. The analysis and interpretation of the icons and imagery on the mural were done by developing a model visually illustrated by a chart which is aligned to the cannons of Yorbá traditions. The icons expressed symbolic representations and imagery of the Aláfin, attendants, chiefs and Europeans who constantly visited the palace in the course of the history of yó.
