Covering philosophy, political economy, and socialism, this work was Engels greatest contribution to the development of Marxist theory, and was highly recommended by Lenin as a "text book of scientific socialism."Among Communists, it is a popular and enduring work which, as Engels wrote to Marx, was an attempt to produce "an encyclopedic survey of our conception of the philosophical, natural-science and historical problems."The philosopher Eugen D?ring had produced his own version of socialism, intended to replace Marxism. In the course of replying to D?ring, Engels reviews advances in science and mathematics and seeks to show how the concepts of dialectical Marxism apply to natural phenomena.
