Although no longer the primary source of light during the night hours, candles are still popular in today's world. They symbolize celebration, mark romance, accompany ceremony, aid relaxation, and accent décor by casting a warm glow for all to enjoy. In the past, however, candle making was a massive industry. More portable and safer than oil lamps, they were the world's main source of illumination for centuries. Many a composer, philosopher, scientist, poet, painter, seamstress, and artisan has been able to continue their work into the night by the intimate light of a candle. And before the invention of reliable clocks, even-burning candles marked the passing hours. This book charts the development and use of candles through the ages and provides insight into the different techniques and materials in use today. The history of candle making is accompanied by chapters that show readers how to make their own candles. The History and Use of Candles is a beautifully photographed, comprehensive look at the changing role of candles and our continued affection for them.
