Glasgow is a name that evokes vivid images of a colorful past magnificent ocean liners gliding into the River Clyde and being towed out to sea to begin their adventurous lives, tobacco lords whose determination and skill brought great wealth from the Americas and beyond, superb comedians, actors, and artists. The Glasgow of today is the result of over a thousand years of struggle to make itself heard, to overcome the hardships of everyday life, and to strike out and succeed in trade and industry, enriching the city while trying to protect its growing population. It is this great ability to survive, a sheer determination in the face of gritty reality, that gives the people of Glasgow their humanity and their humor. Artist and Glasgow resident Charles Jamieson captures the heart of this dynamic city with breathtaking photographs and elegant, insightful text.
