Written in the form of a dialogue and amounting to a nuanced psychological study, an anonymous civil servant bitterly narrates his tragic life story. This is the portrait of an antihero, a character essential to understanding the profound questions about the human condition the author explores in later novels such as The Gambler and Crime and Punishment.
