Titles in the distinctive "Creative Painting" art instruction series focus on creating highly finished, professional quality paintings, and are intended mainly for use by advanced art students. This volume concentrates on the widely divergent approaches to creating the illusion of space and depth on flat surfaces. They include a mastery of the rules of perspective, as employed for instance in traditional landscapes and cityscapes, but they also focus on the purposeful absence of depth, as seen in the abstractions of Mondrian and other artists of the recent past. Detailed instruction also concentrates on the use of light and shadow to enhance the illusion of dimension, and the employment of unusual points of view to emphasize vertical structures, dramatic body poses, and extraordinary views in landscapes. Beautiful and instructive color illustrations on every page include many reproductions of works by famous artists.
