Product DescriptionA counting book in which one by one ten little animals jump on the bed, only to fall off and bump their heads. From School Library JournalAlthough it may share a shelf with Christelow's delightful Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed (Clarion, 1989), Coats ' inventive reincarnation of this well-known nursery chant will lay legitimate claim to the attention of young audiences. She has added a new dimension to the old favorite, replacing the monkeys in the rhyme with a cuddly collection of bouncy, stuffed animals. A lion, a zebra, a panda, etc. are the companions of an endearing little boy who appears, book in hand, eager to read his friends a bedtime story. His tenderness for his playmates is clear when, after a bit of rambunctious jumping, his listeners bounce off the bed and need some proper comforting to recover. Gaily tinted watercolor and pencil illustrations support the warm, reassuring qualities of Coats' story concept. In addition to enjoying the humor of the rhyme, preschoolers will find pleasure in naming the animals as they tumble off the bed and in identifying the large, brightly colored numbers that appear above each block of text. The square format of the book will fit comfortably in young hands; as an added bonus, there is a counting chart that illustrates all of the animals in the story as it builds from one to ten. --Carey Ayres, Port Washington Public Library, NYCopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.
