Earning a doctoral degree is not about getting a piece of paper--it is about making a contribution to the academic community and the body of knowledge for a discipline. But the primary reason there are so many individuals who are "ABD" (all but dissertation) is because writing a dissertation is a daunting process. Having advised doctoral students myself, I can assure the reader that you will run the gamut of emotions as you traverse the path of writing and defense of a dissertation. This book is intended to help the doctoral learner keep a level of sanity while pursuing their dream, combining the experiences of the new doctor with the advice of the professor. Scott Glenn has recently been through the program, experiencing many of the challenges that students might confront, including the loss of his father. The delays, frustrations, and personal choices he had to make were all part of his growth as a doctor. The new doctor tells his story of walking the doctoral journey, sometimes compared to his experiences in the Marine Corps. Scott also provides life advice along with concrete examples from his own dissertation to help the learners who follow. Norma J. Turner offers advice and coaching based upon her years of helping many learners progress academically, professionally, and personally through the doctoral program. Emphasizing the fact that every student is different, Norma shares examples of situations and stories of noteworthy anonymous students to bring to life the doctoral process. Norma has worked with adult learners for over 25 years, characterized by educational professionalism and compassionate discipline as she engages students in achieving their goals. Enjoy the journey and use the advice presented in this book to achieve your dream.
