This is a guide to 27 of the most historic and romantic private castles in Scotland, such as Blair, Drumlanrig, Dunvegan and Glamis, which are illustrated and described in turn. Dramatic and colourful events are highlighted, together with the characters associated with them, and the book also traces, with the help of photographs, how the castles have evolved architecturally to meet the changing needs - and pockets - of their owners. Combining the personal history and architectural development of each castle, the book offers a general overview of an important aspect of Scottish history. All the castles featured can be visited by the public.
