Product Description Take a dose of "Ordinary People" and "Leaving Las Vegas" with an influence of Anne Sexton and midwestern suburban upbringing and you get "Drinking, Denial, Damage, Done." It is the collection of poems dealing with the chronic illness/death of a parent and the suicide of sibling from the perspective of a recovering alcoholic. From the Author This book is written based on experiences over the thirty-nine years of my life. The title of this book is the same as the first poem in this book. It was written as my mothers health took a turn for the worst in 2000. My mother passed away April 13, 2005 section I. is dedicated to her. Section II. is dedicated to my older brother Scott who the world lost to suicide in 1980, at the age of 19. "For Elliot and Stephen Jesse" was named and inspired by Elliot Smith and Stephen Jesse Bernstein, two gifted singer-songwriters the world lost to suicide. Depression and suicide have been a fabric woven throughout my life. I have endured several bouts of depression beginning in my adolescence. Depression is curable, but often is a fatal illness. About the Author The Author is a former soldier, police officer, and deputy sheriff. He has been in recovery from alcoholism since 2000. Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. DRINKING, DENIAL, DAMAGE, DONEThe smell of bourbon pours over me He sits next to me fixing his drink A car in a parking lot outside the hospital The irony is everywhere I turn The circle goes around and around Drinking, Denial, Damage, Done Dad lights another unfiltered cigarette Day 8 in the hospital room The bed slowly swallows her up So tired and weak fighting for each breath The machine forces life into her Unemotionally keeping track of the numbers Drinking, Denial, Damage, Done He wants a drink
