Product Description A collection of animal tales by such authors as Sarah Hayes, Dick King Smith, and Mary Rayner From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 2?Grindley draws together 10 original stories from respected children's authors such as Mary Rayner and Dick King-Smith. Almost half are set in the jungle, including Mary Hoffman's pourquoi story, "How the Lemur Got Her Tail." The strangest and most open-ended offering is Jenny Koralek's "Zebra Running," set in an unspecified but vaguely Middle Eastern locale, in which a zebra escapes and leads the townspeople to safety after an earthquake. In general, though, the plots are easily understood and predictable enough for preschoolers and early readers. The upbeat, light tone is ably reinforced by Dodds's illustrations. Her style recalls the work of the Ahlbergs and shares their ability to amuse without succumbing to cuteness. Good read-aloud potential for parents and teachers.?Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MNCopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.
