At its core are the men and women who travelled from the North, the letters they wrote home, the private journals in which they recorded their experiences, and the works of art, including their own, which they brought back with them from the continent. The book's chronological approach---which includes a re-evaluation of the aftermath of the Grand Tour in the nineteenth century---highlights both the broad similarities in individual responses to the Grand Tour at any one period, and differing reactions to it over time.
