The Florida Keys, a chain of islands extending from mainland Florida over a hundred miles into the Gulf of Mexico, is not only a tourist magnet, but is the setting for Conch Salad.Big Pine Key, closer to Cuba than Miami, is a tropical paradise of an island. On it lurks many endangered species, including the locals being squeezed out by tourists, noise, and now a corpse stuffed into a lobster trap. Two hippies, a drug-runner, a shark-wrestling Cuban, a crew of degenerates, and a gang of bored teens round out the cast of a story so unbelievable it could only happen in Florida. Somewhere in the middle, endangered species are decimated, paranoia runs rampant, and the rich get richer in this fast-paced story of Keys corruption, lunatics, and general nonsense.Conch Salad glorifies old men in Speedos, legitimizes drug use, makes rainbow flip-flops fashionable, and keeps its readers laughing out loud page after page.
