Product DescriptionAfter a catastrophe turns Earth into an inhospitable wilderness, young Rose sets out to find help for her grandmother and a baby, warding off wolves and fierce humans, and finally reaching a group of survivors with scientific interests in restoring Earth to its original beauty. After the earth is transformed into an inhospitable wilderness, Rose sets out to find help, fending off the attacks of both humans and wolves and, upon reching her destination, learns the causes of the catastrophe that almost destroyed the worldFrom School Library JournalGrade 5-8 In this story set in the future, Little Rose, Baby, and Grandmother live in a primitive Camp run by Boss. After Boss and the other villagers are killed in an explosion, Grandmother sends Rose to ask for help from the Others in the far-away hill. Life in this novel is primitive: it's very cold, and Rose's trek is difficult. When she gets there, the scientists on the hill discover that Rose is the granddaughter of their leading scientist. Rose is accepted; Grandmother and Baby are rescued. This book has a message that man should not interfere with his environment or it will backfire on him and civilization will crumble. The message is too heavy, too sudden, and too unlikely to arouse interest. Rose is the only even partially developed character in the book, and she's too flat for readers to believe in or care about. Give readers Dickinson's Weathermonger (Little, 1969; o.p.) or Christopher's The White Mountains (Macmillan, 1967) for a world suddenly gone primitive. Don't give them Earthchange.Andrea G.
