This book is about the composer and conductor Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), focussing on his years as chief conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and director of the Vienna Opera (1897-1907). Those were the greatest years in that institution's history and the decisive years of his life. This book is also a portrait of the Viennese metropolitan culture from which many of the twentieth centurys greatest achievements in art and science were to spring, and of the man who was that cultures supreme artistic representative. It is a multifaceted retrospective of Mahler's Viennese years.
