What was intended to be a single volume in 1989 has now grown to four, including not only books but issues of periodicals devoted to well- defined monographic subjects, CD-ROMs, and videos; and extending the scope to photographers born after 1962. The articles are arranged alphabetically, usually by a particular photographer or photograph, but sometimes by a genre such as abstraction or a subject such as Great Britain; they are numbered sequentially following volume three. The works cited include publications with a retrospective character or an essay on the photographer, individual exhibition catalogues, autobiographical publications, award publications, series, publications commissioned by national or local authorities, books from publishers specializing in photography, and books by photographers using old processes and techniques such as cyanotype and gum bichromate.
