Product Description Turtle tries to fly like a bird, dive like a frog, climb like a squirrel, and imitate other animals, but it is not until it rains, and all the other animals run for cover, that Turtle realizes his specialness From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1 Poor Turtle is frustrated by his inability to fly like Bird, dive like Frog, climb like Squirrel, and run like Rabbit. Each of Turtle's attempts at locomotion ends with ``crashes,'' ``flops,'' ``wobbles,'' and ``pants.'' Meanwhile, it starts to rain, and as Turtle's friends seek cover, Turtle discovers what he alone can dopull himself into his shell and remain dry. In his watercolor and ink illustrations, Maris provides just the right amount of detail in both the animal characters and the natural settings. One sentence of text in a large typeface is positioned at the bottom of each spread, directing attention to the pictured animal activities. The book's repetitive dialogue and bold print is suitable for beginning readers, although preschoolers will especially appreciate the story. This title can join the likes of Frank Asch's Turtle Tale (Dial, 1980) and Alice Vaught Davis' Timothy Turtle (HBJ, 1972).Mary Beth Burgoyne, Mesa Pub .
