Printed cards were first inserted into packages of cigarettes in the 1870's, and it was not long before they began appearing as sets on popular subjects, thus encouraging smokers to buy a given brand until the entire set was collected. The golden age of the cigarette card was from the 1920''s through the 1930's, and Britain was the richest source. The set we reproduce here was of 50 cards, of which we reproduce 46. The subjects were many, and the art frequently of high quality. This was a set on first-aid methods. Product Description This book attempts to show us beautiful things which are not ordinarily thought of as beautiful--to make invisible art visible. Some of the things included in Invisible Art are: coloring book covers, old postcards, cigarette cards, and children's book illustrations. Unusual themes are explored, such as: the number three, men and women in boats, a history of the hammock, personifications of mountains, and artful modes of concealment.
