Product DescriptionA biography of the Soviet leader, focusing on his formative years in Soviet Georgia, his rise to the top of the Communist party, and his leadership during World War II.From School Library JournalGrade 7 Up-- In a precise, crisp style, Caulkins focuses on a man many view as one of the greatest tyrants the world has known, yet who is recognized for transforming the Soviet Union into an industrialized--albeit autocratic--nation. Caulkins guides readers through the complexities of Soviet history, revealing the enigmatic character of Stalin. No background reading is required. The book is a good introduction for those learning about the U.S.S.R. today, and it provides an added dimension to Albert Marrin's Stalin: Russia's Man of Steel (Viking, 1988). A well-organized, worthy purchase for school and public libraries. --L. R. Little, Penticton Public Library, B.C., CanadaCopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.
