Lavender - a novella When Tivoli Hansen leaves the safety of her fathers car, she stares at Hickory Manor before walking past dormant gray stalks of lavender, to the foreboding paint-hungry house. The moment of her dreaded visit to Aunt Evelyn has arrived. A servant opens the door and leads her down a hallway to the parlor door. Tivoli takes a deep breath before entering the stuffy, semi-dark room and walks to meet a woman who holds out her hand in welcome. To her surprise, the next hour flies by, as Aunt Evelyn asks her about school and her family. Tivoli relaxes, until she turns to glance at a wall covered with a faded painting of a meadow. Her aunt invites her to look at it carefully. Tivoli shivers as she studies a corner of intense blue-purple flowers that appear to have been painted recently. She senses that the mysterious wall is alive. On Tivolis next visit, Aunt Evelyn shows her a set of fan-shaped slats in the patch of lavender. She fits a key into a slot, and a portal opens. Tivoli feels a fresh breeze, as Aunt Evelyn takes the girls hand and leads her through this opening, into a world that is about to change Tivolis life.
