A researcher with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, or UNIDO, looks at how armed conflict has shifted since World War II, from wars for national independence in the 1950s and '60s to geopolitical wars in the 1970s and '80s to "wars of a third kind" today that take place within national boundaries. The UN system has just begun to adjust to this new reality of conflict and make long-term prevention a priority issue for international agendas; Bredel sees a key role in these efforts for UN agencies that deal with the economic characteristics of conflict. Martinus Nijhoff is an imprint of Brill Academic Publishers. Annotation 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
