The insightful portraits, dramatic historical scenes, and exotic nudes of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) are presented in this Masters of Art volume in brilliant detail - in the fascinating text by Robert Rosenblum and in the forty colorplates and numerous black-and-white illustrations.

Ingres, one of the most sophisticated masters of his period and one of the greatest draftsmen of all time, combined the cool discipline of the Classicists with the warm sensuality of the Romantics to produce an extraordinary series of works in an astonishing diversity of styles. A pupil of the great painter Jacques-Louis David, Ingres - much like Picasso in our own time - was able to assume multiple guises with great success.

The beauty and range of Ingres' works, which reveal a true sense of color and mastery of line, are evident throughout this volume. Here are his exquisite Grande Odalisque and Bather of Valpincon, his memorable portraits of Lorenzo Bartolini and Louis-Francois Bertin, his colorful The Apotheosis of Homer, among many others, each accompanied by a full interpretation.
