Designed for an introductory, nontechnical college course, this book requires no background in either science or music. Hall's text helps readers use simple physical and mathematical concepts as tools for understanding how music works and, at the same time, to use their interests in music to motivate the study, appreciation, and understanding of the underlying principles of physics. Hall effectively draws on his training as a scientist and a professional musician to help readers develop an appreciation for physical processes without neglecting the psychological and esthetic aspects of musical acoustics.
