During Aurora's formative years, most family secrets were dealt with complete silence when questioned by her. Over the years she learned that during their journey to the United States her sister had died and had been buried in the desert and that her real father had been separated from the family before they reached their destination. The lack of an adequate explanation as to why as an infant she was taken to live with total strangers for a few years, and later as a young child, was also permitted to travel to Los Angeles with her alcoholic godfather to stay with his family every summer, contributed to her feelings of not really belonging.
