'And lo and behold, in came Santa with a big sack on his back filled with apples, oranges, candy, and all kinds of groceries. That is the Christmas that always takes me back to my childhood.'From the generations of an Appalachian family, Porch Lights on a Mountainside is a compilation of true stories, local legends, poetry, and musings. It is a glimpse into the lives of Jack and his family, past and present-day. Jack was born in the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee during the worst of the Great Depression. The extended family of eight lived in an old tumble-down shack that barely provided shelter from the elements. Times were tough, food was scarce, and clothing inadequate. Jack sometimes only had one well-worn shirt to wear, but his mother washed it every day. The stories in this book traverse this family's journey; from childhood to the legacy they leave behind.
