About the Author The author has lived all but eight years of his life on the family ranch in Montana's South Central Country, an area of high plains and Montana's highest mountains that lead into Yellowstone Park. Knowledge of horses is a key part of this story, and the Keating Ranch, now managed by the author's three sons, still use horses almost daily in such jobs as moving or rounding up cattle, and sometimes the buffalo they raise. The author also owned race horses, usually in partnerships that ran in both Montana and California. Once in a big California race he had the thrill of watching, and hearing, the announcer describe his horse's late drive to overtake the leader at the wire. Unfortunately, on that occasion his horse didn't win by a nose, as the one in this story, but lost by that much.
