Product Description After World War II, hundreds of thousands of young Americans were returning to our homes after years of successfully defending our county all over the world. We just wanted to find that very special person, start our families and lives. We had had enough of war and all the misery it brings. Probably 99.9% shared very little or nothing with others, yet every single one of them had a story to tell. Today it is sad that a thousand a day are going to their graves and with each one a small piece of history that will never be known goes with them. About the Author December 22, 1941, I celebrated my fifteenth birthday. Early in 1942 I started working for the Postal Telegraph , competitor of the Western Union , the two fastest ways of delivering printed messages at the time. We messenger boys delivered envelope enclosed Morse code messages translated by typewriter all over the Roanoke Valley in rain, snow, and ice, every kind of weather on straight chain, leg powered bikes, no gears, no motors. When we left the office we had to press a time clock out and in, showing how much time we took to make deliveries, no stopping or goofing around.
