Byrd (Jackie) has been a partner with her husband Toby in the firm of BYRD & BYRD, LLC since 1999, focusing her practice on issues of Elder Law- including estate planning, wills and trusts, powers of attorney, special needs trusts, Medicaid eligibility, and asset preservation. In December, 2004, Jackie was recognized by her peers, with her selection in Washingtonian magazines list of 280 Top Washington Attorneys. Jackie is currently the Recording Secretary of the Maryland/D.C. chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and in 2003 won the NAELA Award for Outstanding Chapter Member. She is a founding Co-Chair of the Elder Law Section of the Prince Georges County Bar Association and a member of the Governing Council of the Elder Law Section of the Maryland State Bar Association. In June of 2004, she received the Presidents Award from the Prince Georges County Bar Association for outstanding contributions to the Bar and to the community. Jackie graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law. As a UB alumna, Jackie received a Dean's Citation as Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Administration newsletter, "The Official Reporter." While in law school, she was a Teaching Assistant in the Legal Analysis, Research and Writing program. Before entering law school in 1995, Jackie capped a twenty-five year career on Capitol Hill as Assistant to the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives. In 1994, she was chosen for and completed the prestigious Senior Managers in Government Program at Harvard. Her undergraduate work was done at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas where she received a BA in Speech and Drama, and earned membership in the honorary forensic fraternity, Phi Kappa Delta. Jackie writes a weekly Senior Moments column for The Bowie Blade-News and the Crofton Crier newspapers. In July 2005, the first 150 columns were compiled and published in a book, Senior Moments: A book for seniors and those who love them. Jackie is a proud grandmother who delights in spending every possible moment with triplets Toby, Jack and Anna, and little brother Timothy. Jackie also takes pleasure in reading, playing piano, watching movies and traveling with her husband Toby.
