Stone and Ice, a book of poetry and poetic prose, is introspective, metaphysical, and explorative, and on the whole, reflects the adventurous spirit of the poet, a true adventurer (backpacking, mountain climbing, and whitewater kayaking). For many of the poems, Whitson uses metaphors and similes derived from nature, examining the inner self and the world in which he lives. For example, an innocuous backpacking trip transitions into a dangerous, life-altering, metaphysical journey--an examination of his life and his place in the world. However, not all the poems arise from nature, and yet there is always an adventurous element within each: a person reverently caresses dark secrets from the mind of another; the poet unbinds himself from vices to live his own beliefs and thoughts. And then there's the purely introspective: a quiet Sunday becomes surreal; summer colors linger in the shadows when the poet attempts to reflect on his childhood; a year of the poet's life becomes abstract!
