Understanding English is a series of books designed to reinforce skills and knowledge at Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum. Each book focuses on a particular aspect of literacy with explanations and teaching points, exercises, answers section and 'Now you try!' extension activities to ensure that learning is really secure. Non-fiction writing is vital. It gives us all the facts that we need and helps us to pass information to others. Reports, instructions, recounts, advertisements, discussions, explanations - all these are forms of non-fiction writing, and this book shows clearly how each can best be understood. Stimulating activities give helpful practice in writing clear text for others to read and use. The Reading and Writing Non-fiction book includes: skimming a report and scanning for information, gathering information and writing a report, following and writing instructions, newspaper reports, fact and opinion (in the context of advertisements), writing and summarising a discussion and understanding technical words.
