From the Author One day you must write a book about your adventures here, in Africa. You must tell the world how black African Muslims called you brother, and welcomed you into their home, to live for months, after your own people cast you aside", he announced, gazing at the bustling colorful crowded marketplace. Abdul, Id love to, but writing takes too much time, and Im busy living! the seminarian responded casually, preoccupied with studying the decrepit shantytown ghetto before him. The slum West Point, butted against the sleeping ocean, on the edge of Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. My White Mandingo friend we are history, you and I together. Promise me that you will remember us by writing our story. Please, Abdul, you know Ill never forget you or my life in Africa. But that is not enough, he added pausing. If not for us, than do it also for your Jewish friend Jonathan. That a Christian can befriend a Jew, and that a Muslim can call this same Christian man his brother is amazing. Maybe, one day, Muslims and Jews can call themselves the same.So ? promise me, that you will write the story! Please! It would take years, because I am busy living, and I lack the luxury of being wealthy enough to just write. My brother! Promise me. I promise, Maurice said with reluctance. Its been a nine-year process, working full time and raising two sons with my wife on our sailboat. Hurricane Andrew and the seven hours we spent on our capsized boat challeged me by destroying my computer and the first text. We survived. Then I spent the next year rebuilding the boat, and began rewriting the book. While certain artistic liberties have been taken, the book is over ninety percent true. Initially I designed it as a Trilogy, but my wife and I cut a hundred thousand words, so now it is two books instead of three. Im glad. I had no idea how much work it would take, but ? a promise is a promise, and promises, I keep.
